We sure think that's true. Though we've been coming here since 1981, we have yet to wish we had gone somewhere else. We've also never run out of things to do - (maybe that's because relaxing on the beach or in the cool of our Bougainvillea shaded terrace is our number one activity when we escape to Wailea)
On this page we hope to offer some insight into the less obvious things you can do on Maui. We'll have links to some favorite sites and tips on restaurants, golf, snorkeling and other activities we enjoy here on the island. Bookmark this page and use it as a starting point for your Maui dreamin'.
Wailea is located on the southwest side of the island about 20 minutes from Kahului Airport between Kihei and Makena. It is known for its reliable weather (this is the sunny side), and lots of excellent golf and water sports.
We love snorkeling and South Maui has some of the best and easiest access spots on the island. Kam III, Keawakapu and Ulua beaches offer good, easy snorkeling just out our door.
Whale watching from both of our condos is a preferred pass time in the winter Months. Humpback Whales spend December-Early April in the protected Maui waters giving birth to their young. They are spotted as early as late October and as late as the first of May but prime time for Whales is January - March. For more info about this delightful pass time click here for amazing whale watch footage a friend shot March 1, 2008 aboard a whale watching trip off Wailea.
For those that know the importance of food, there are several exceptional restaurants in the luxurious hotels near Keawakapu Beach and lots of others within 15 minutes of the condo Click here for even more links to island activities, restaurants and transportation resources.
GOLF
If we're not on our lanai, whale watching or snorkeling, you'll
probably find us on the golf course. Golf on Maui can be expensive
for the tourist - even with special rates. Afternoon play is almost
half price. This is because the trade winds blow making for some
very interesting golf. Our secret - Find the courses that are
sheltered from the trades - a great deal in the PM. All the courses
are well cared for and the scenery can't be beat. Staying in Wailea
Ekahi gives you a good rate at the 3 Wailea courses. Weather on
this end is more predictable than the west coast (Kaanapali).
We happen to think those courses are over rated - you may not
agree.
Our favorite courses on Maui are: Makena (#15 on the south course is the favorite of the men in our group) Wailea Blue (there are 2 others) Elleair: (808) 874-0777 We have discount coupons availble for this near by course. Rates start at $65, play as much as you can in one day for around $130 (prices here are less than the resort courses and the slope is
not as difficult but I can never score as well). On Piilani Hwy at Lipoa - one block from Safeway. Pukalani: (808) 572-1314 (this is the course to play on a hot day - at 1200 ft it is half way up Haleakala and has a cool climate and great views. Relatively inexpensive at $75 but an hour's drive. The DUNES at Maui Lani: (808) 873-0422 (a new, challenging course with a different feel to each hole. Mid to High range prices. Wonderful views - left at Dairy road as you head to airport)
